A Hundred Different Projects

11/1/76   […]

i feel a little surprised that i can move on to a new phase. i have pushed hard to close in my cabin, and get a roof on, pushed hard and been obsessed. now that is accomplished, i can do no more until i make some money. first i must get out of debt—that will take a couple of months of steady work […]

oh, winter comes, and of course like all of nature i withdraw ~ winters are usually my loneliest, hardest times. […]

i have undertaken to buy some land and live on it ~ this is important, this allows for no blunders or surrenders, this must be a sustained effort, my god! i am really committing myself to something!  […]

11/1/77 morning in the canyon, clear and sunny. […]

what a fine weekend. on sunday ron & neil & dana & gary & shelley & pat & andrea came over to my cabin. we just sat around and made some music, and we guys took a hike in search of soapstone, found a little, scrambled about on a nice outcrop for a while. super lichen. one block had such incredible orange lichen that i am tempted to go retrieve it. then i made tacos for everyone and that was a first ~ company for dinner!“

11/1/78 before dawn. a pool of fog in the canyon depths and a wave cloud over the sierra crest…”

11/1/83 The hazy nature of my intentions in even keeping a journal is an obstacle to blundering forward. I can lapse into melancholy self-loathing, or become an elder statesman and pontificate upon the Nature of Things. I can write sloppily, to maintain the spontaneous, uncontrived appearance that excuses all failings. What failings? This is for myself ~ it has no need to become Merchandise ~ I can flaunt my failings herein, in hope of eventually sorting out What It's All About. But it's hard to record the Truth.

[…]

Then again, for all my moping I take joy in watching the canyon, and all the changes that Fall brings.

A hundred different projects underway. Cliff Patio, Hydraulicking, Hearth in Cabin, Foam Dome, Terrace Expansion, Trail Making, Meadow Making, Hot Tub, Hot Tub Water System, Cabin Foundation, Hydropower, Proper Battery Set-up, Etc. Etc. Etc. … add on to Cabin, build Another Cabin, Etc. Etc. Etc.“

11/1/86   [...] Oh, and the other night—two nights ago—I heard the most unearthly wailing right here near the cabin, like a cross between a bird and a bobcat, a very very sick bobcat—lasted about ten minutes—about fifty feet away.”

Hi all,

I have made a web page about Green Valley, on the North Fork American, at

http://home.inreach.com/rtowle/GV/Green_Valley.html
[The content is now archived here:
http://northforktrails.com/RussellTowle/GV/Green_Valley.html ]
The page contains a discussion of the geology, especially the unusual Pleistocene gravels there, and also, a section on the mining history, with every old newspaper article I have been able to discover thus far.

There are a few graphics. The whole thing runs over 300K, so have a little patience.

Cheers!

Russell Towle
